  • Part B – Question 6

You are to create a headline about the 2nd year digital classes in this program. The audience will be 1st year students. Please provide the headline and your reasoning behind it. (4 Marks)

“Top 7 reasons the 2nd year digital classes are tough, but fair”

As done previously, I once again utilized numbers as an appealing part of my headline. Knowing that the audience will know about St. Clair College for a fact this time, I can directly refer to the 2nd year digital classes without worrying that my audience won’t know what I’m talking about. Using the format of “Top 7 reasons” is a great lure, as long as the content provided matches the headline’s promises.

  • Part B – Question 5

Create a headline for an article about the SCC Advertising Program targeted to local graduating high school students. I am specifically not telling you what to do or the questions that need to be asked. Please provide the following:

    a. Provide the headline

“This 3-year College program guarantees work – and it’s not far from home!”

    b. Provide an overview of the elements missing in the instructions required for this task.

For this task, I used ChatGPT to theory-craft headlines for part A of this assignment, while feeding the AI my rules and restrictions necessary when constructing one. Through completing part A of this assignment, I’ve learned some nuances on what to write, how to utilize certain writing concepts, and how AI can be overstimulated with too many regulations. The headline created above (question 5.a.) was created by me, without the use of AI.

    c. Explain the headline you created, why, and any other reasons/justifications you need to provide to me for the headline you created. (6 Marks)

When creating this headline, I wanted to match many of the criteria I previously used when working with ChatGPT. My first point was to include a number in the headline, because the use of numbers in a headline have been proven to work, time over time (Briscoe, W6 – Headline Secrets (W25).pdf, Slides 21-24). I mimicked a few of the other strategies I previously used through part A; not including the name of the institution to draw in reader interest, less than 100 characters in length, written in plain language and explaining the value a reader would gain if participating in the headline’s content.

  • Part B – Question 4

Now you are going to apply what you have learned in class. As per the class discussion, please provide me with three different headlines for the story (article in Question #3) and outline your reasoning(s) and explanation for each. Please ensure you base your answer on the different elements of headlines we spoke about in class. Please go into detail for each. (12 Marks)

My first new headline would be “How Canadians are harnessing US tariffs to their advantage”. Although not quite the same play on emotion, I believe it represents the content well and utilizes a similar question-based headline format as the original headline.

My second headline would be “The way Canada is fighting back against US tariffs”. Knowing how the article answers this statement and fully explains all the methods, it does a great job representing the content it describes. Someone who may click on the article with the expectation of learning the ins and outs of the headline’s statement would have their questions answered before long.

My third headline would be “American businesses are in trouble… and Canadian consumers are proving it”. While adding more personality in the way the headline is written, it leaves the reader with more questions than answers. I wouldn’t expect a headline such as this from the New York Times, but I believe this headline to be intriguing to investigate from the perspective of someone who might not know very much on the subject matter.

  • Part B – Question 3

As discussed in class, why do you feel Headlines are so important in web content? Please provide me with an example of a headline you clicked on recently (submit the exact headline including a screenshot) and outline in detail why you clicked it. In question #1, I asked why it resonated with you. For this question, I am asking why you actually clicked on it. This cannot be the same headline as question #1 (8 Marks)

As mentioned in class (Briscoe, W6 – A – Crafting Great Headlines (W25).pdf, Slide 5), meeting the standards of today’s average digital user is incredibly challenging. They want to be surprised and presented with interesting, new information, while being impatient and fast moving. So fast moving, in fact, that we have less than 3 seconds to get a headline across to the user before they move on (Briscoe, W6 – A – Crafting Great Headlines (W25).pdf, Slide 9). Headlines are as important as they are because they represent the main notes of the story you’re trying to tell and the tone you’re using to tell it, while being short enough to sound enticing to read (Briscoe, W6 – A – Crafting Great Headlines (W25).pdf, Slides 16-18). If a headline fails to capture a reader immediately, it’s highly unlikely they’ll read further into your content and move on forever.

The article I’m using for this question is from the New York Times, with the headline “How Canadians Are Making Their Anger Toward the U.S. Loud and Clear”.

I clicked on the headline for this article for a few reasons. Beyond my personal interest in the subject matter, the headline is structured as a response to their own query. Knowing what I do about the subject of the article, which I believe well represents the article, I clicked on the article to both validate and verify what I already knew on the subject and learn about other aspects of the story that I may not be aware of. I find the headline well structured and it plays well into emotion as well, taking advantage of my curiosity and interest in the article’s subject.

  • Part B – Question 2

As per the headline in Question #1, was the headline representative of the article? Please explain your reasoning in detail. (4 Marks)

The headline for this article was very accurate, and allowed the article to thoroughly explain every question we, as readers, might have on the situation at hand. The article helped demonstrate the bulk of the content through the use of videos recorded about the situation and the outcry of others on social media. The headline’s use of the quote ‘Absolutely insane’ invites readers to investigate and uncover who said this, and how they are related to the story. As the article describes, the quote was actually taken from a commenter on TikTok, who gave their opinion on the original video before the NYP covered the story.

  • Part B – Question 1

Find one (1) headline that you came across recently and thought it was great. You are to explain why it resonated with you. Please ensure that you base your answers only topics discussed in class. Meaning, based on course content discussed in class, you are to tie specific elements that we discussed constituted a “good” headline or “elements” of a good headline and how this specific element is referenced in the headline that resonated with you. (6 Marks)

The article I chose for this question was “Couple abandons baby in blanket-covered stroller at Disney — so they could get on a ride: ‘Absolutely insane’”.

This article resonated with me purely out of the absurdity of the headline. Personally, I’m critical of Disney and their business practices, and this article somewhat plays into my opinion on the company. I believe this headline worked well because it plays into our emotions. The absurdity that resonate with me when first reading the headline, and subsequently reading through the article, played into my emotion of anger and curiosity (Briscoe, W6 – Headline Secrets (W25).pdf, Slide 59).

  • Part B – Question 3

For the purpose of this question, we are going to view your first blog post (Part “B” Question #1) as an introductory online campaign. Please answer the following questions: a. What is your intended goal and why? (3 marks) b. Who are you writing for and why? (3 marks) c. What type of “Experience” will you be creating for the visitors? Please explain and justify your reasoning. (2 marks)

    a. My intended goal in my written blog post was to address the main problems people have with planning and managing events, sympathize with the perspective that it can be a difficult and tedious act, and express to them how qualified and knowledgeable the website is in solving those problems.

    b. I had written the first blog post aimed at people who find it difficult to plan and organize events. This kind of messaging helps people resonate and relate to the business’ perspective better, and shows them how approachable it really is.

    c. When visiting my blog or website, I’d like to provide an informative experience for visitors. As I collect and post content relating to event management and planning, visitors should browse with the expectation to learn something new, even if it helps them manage something as small as a group dinner.

  • Part B – Question 2

As per Part “A”, question #3, please re-write the same content as stated in Part “B” question #1 for each medium. For example, if you selected Facebook as a medium, re-write the content for Facebook. Please pay attention to what this question is asking. You can include the content in one post as long as it is clearly separated and defined. We spoke about how to do this and why this is important in multiple classes. (12 Marks)
