Question 1. a.

How would you explain to someone what “Plain English writing” is? (4 Marks)

Plain English writing is a writing composition style that “helps readers quickly and easily understand your message” (Briscoe, Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 6). Writing in Plain English can be as simple as avoiding the use of acronyms or abbreviations, which would be indecipherable to readers who don’t know their meanings. Essentially, Plain English writing is a way to compose written content in order to appeal to the most people possible, using terminology that would be best understood by any random member of the public.
